A carcinogen is any substance that is an agent directly involved in causing cancer. Carcinogens are not toxic right away. Their effect can be insidious. There are many natural carcinogens. Several radioactive substances are considered to be carcinogenics. Carcinogenics can arise in both natural and synthetic substances. As dangerous as carcinogens are, most of them are common in our everyday life. Most carcinogens require long term use to cause cancer to show up in the body. Some examples of carcinogens are alcohol, tobacco and cigarette smoke. Tobacco smoke, in 1992, was classified as a Group A carcinogen. Group A being the most dangerous class. Smokeless tobacco contains nicotine along with 28 other carcinogens. All of them are absorbed into the blood throughout the mucous membranes and the digestive tract. Most carcinogens are very addictive, and once you start you can not stop. Carcinogens cause cancer by producing changes in the genetic materials, or DNA, of a cell. Once the cells are filled with this, they result in uncontrolled cell decision. The DNA can be changed directly or it can react with other chemicals throughout the body to make substances that cause gene mutation. It is pretty common for cancer to appear 20 to 25 years after you start using a carcinogen.

1: The policy that all student except freshman are aloud to leave campus for lunch for RHHS will start September 14.

2: Walmart will be placing a super Walmart in Rock Hill in May of 2006. The town meeting will be held on April 2006 about how this could be a bad idea because it could hurt lol business.

3: A 6th grade student has been tested out to be a genius by his principal, Mr. Fred George. Napoleon Dynamite is suppose to be a 6th grader this year but because of his genius status he would like to go straight to high school so he doesn’t have to waist any time in middle school.

4: A survey was released yesterday by the Child Abuse Prevention Center in Baltamore that three to four children die everyday in the United States from child abuse or neglect.

5: A fire that was started by a cigarette on a sofa at 2300 block of Main Street caused $76,000 in damages.

A student brought a clock to school and was accused of it being a bomb. He was arrested right away. Soon after he was arrested the media went crazy over this story. But the truth is there was no story. The bomb was just a clock. When they realized it was just a clock they were very embarrassed about what they had done. His name was printed all over every newspaper and his picture was on the cover of every magazine. For an apology he was invited to the White House. He talked with the president about his love for science. My position on this is that I think all the newspapers and magazines should now have to print out the true story of what really happened. This does not have much impact on the world but it does affect the racism issues. They thought the clock was a bomb just because he was a Muslim and that got a racism debate started up. My topic this week is 9/11. I know this is not a current event but it still affects us today. The article I used was called “14 Years After 9/11, the War on Terror is Accomplished Everything Bin Laden hoped would happen”. I got my article from thenation.com. On September 11, 2001 a awful thing happened. 2 planes were flown into the twin towers. Some people on the bottom floors were able to get out, but others on the upper floors could not find anyway out so they were burned or they jumped. My position on the issue is that this was a horrible tragedy for all the families of the victims and the ones who were flying the planes deserved what they got. This event affected all of America and still does down to this very day. This also affects the world. It affects how we see other countries and how other countries see us.
